Penn Brad Oil Museum

 In 1881, the Bradford Oil Field produced an incredible 83% of the total oil output in the United States, with more than 90,000 wells drilled throughout the region. Located in McKean County, Pennsylvania, the field draws its oil from the Upper Devonian Bradford Sands and remains one of the most historically significant oil-producing regions in the world.

The Penn Brad Oil Museum preserves the heritage, innovation, and spirit of this remarkable oil community. Step back into the boom years of the world's first billion-dollar oil field as you tour an authentic oil lease house and explore exhibits showcasing the people, equipment, and technology that built an industry. After your visit, enjoy a walking tour of nearby Bradford's National Historic District, where the grand architecture reflects the prosperity created by the Oil Barons of the early 1900s.

The Bradford Oil Field continues to play an important role in Pennsylvania's petroleum industry today. At the museum, you'll hear fascinating "Wildcatting Tales" beside our impressive 72-foot-tall 1890-era Standard Rig. Guided by knowledgeable oil country veterans, you'll discover unique pieces of oilfield history—including yellow dogs, barkers, headache posts, hurry-up sticks, and sucker rods—and learn how these tools helped produce Pennsylvania's "miracle molecule." You'll also hear the legendary story of Music Mountain.
